Last Fall I met our longest serving Superintendent - Al Beeney (34 years) for a chat at the Club.  Al worked for North Halton during some interesting times.  Most notably the flood of 1982 and the construction of our course from a 9 hole to 18 hole layout.  Al was also the one to hire Ryan Scott from working in the Club kitchen to the Greens Staff.

Al lived on the property and at one time caught some illegal divers getting golf balls out of the 9th hole pond in the middle of the night.  While waiting for the police, Al blocked them from getting away.  When he went to court the accused came in handcuffs.  Al was curious why they were handcuffed under the circumstances.  Turned out the men were also wanted for attempted manslaughter!

Al also mentioned when he came to the Club, there was no rough.  Everything was 1 1/2" in height.  He went to the Board to grow the rough to 2 1/2".  Apparently there were some Board members who didn't like that.

This year has been particularly tough on Superintendents everywhere with the extreme heat of the summer and the challenging time of working under Covid conditions.  Take some time to thank our Superintendent.
